Clyfford Still Museum
Denver, Co
As a finalist in an invited international competition, we proposed that a sequence of intimate galleries was the key to a successful museum. Still’s work is forceful and demanding, and seeing more than a couple of his paintings at any one time can be very challenging. By presenting only a few pictures in each gallery the viewer would feel safe to engage in the visceral, intuitive experience of Still’s work.
A central courtyard brings in daylight and creates a reference point for a visitor’s exploration of the work of this important Abstract Expressionist. The quiet, horizontal massing of the building compliments the highly expressive Denver Art Museum next door.
